Although it has been around twenty years since the mining of asbestos ceased in Australia, asbestos is still being mined and produced in various countries around the world. The current main producers, who produce around 93% of the world’s asbestos are: Brazil, Canada, China, Kazakhstan and Russia. Asbestos production must not be confused with asbestos which may be removed from the ground as byproduct of mining other commodities such as nickel or iron ore.
Aside from Canada, the leading producers of asbestos are also leading consumers of asbetsos and asbestos based products. Other leading consumers include India, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.
Countries which are reported to have been mining, producing or consuming asbestos since 2005 include:
- North Korea
- Serbia & Montenegro
